history
20.08.1918 - formed at Tresco Base by the merger of several separate squadrons (Nos. 350, 351, 352 and 353) of the Coastal Air Force, which, equipped with flying boats, carried out mostly anti-submarine patrols until the end of the war
15.05.1919 - disbanded
30.10.1939 - reconstituted at Leconfield as a fighter unit, designed to protect convoys
DD.03.1940 - after re-equipping with Spitfire fighters, joins the Battle of Britain and then conducts offensive sorties over occupied Europe
22.01.1943 - moves to Orkney for "rest"
24.06.1943 - returns to the south of England and again engages in offensive over the continent
DD.09.1944 - after re-equipping with Mustang fighters, long-range bomber escorts become the main activity
1945-1946 - Remains based in the UK in the post-war period, gradually re-equipped with jet technology
01.09.1946 - disbanded by renaming to 266 Squadron
01.08.1952 - reconstituted at Oldenburg Base in Germany as a fighter-bomber unit, later becoming a pure fighter unit after rearmament
15.07.1957 - disbanded
22.10.1958 - reconstituted as a reserve and operational training unit
31.08.1992 - disbanded
01.09.1992 - reconstituted as a training unit
01.04.1994 - dissolved by redesignation as 208th (Reserve) Squadron
