1940

The unit is formed at Kirton in Lindsey, mostly from members of the pre-war Polish fighter squadrons III/5 and III/6. After the squadron was formed, there was disillusionment among pilots who had experience of fighting over Poland and France that instead of the expected Hurricanes the unit received Boulton Paul Defiant Mk.I aircraft, where the pilot was merely a "taxi driver" to the deck gunner. Following a complaint to the Inspectorate of the Polish Air Force, the disgruntled pilots were transferred to day fighter squadrons and the squadron was replenished with pilots who were willing and happy to be deployed into combat. Therefore, the squadron was not declared operational until almost half a year after its formation. From December it began patrolling over sea lanes in the Irish Sea.

During this year the squadron gained no victories and lost no airmen.

A great event, which was between the pilots adopted with enthusiasm, it was in mid-August, overkill on a heavy twin engine fighter Bristol Beaufighter Mk.IIF. The beginning of the year was marked by several air disasters in which in addition to the discipline involved and the difficulty of piloting Beufighteru. Since mid-April, however, appear also achievements in the form of a few downed bombers. Of great benefit was overkill to a more powerful version of Beufighteru Mk.VIF, which the pilots very popular. Have gained on them a few wins, but at the end of December began the squadron gradually receive the first machine De Havilland Mosquito NF Mk.II, which belonged to the best, the british air force used.
