history
The squadron was formed on 14 October 1925 at Northolt as a light bomber squadron of the Auxiliary Air Force. In July 1934 it is transformed into a fighter unit and enters World War II combat as a regular fighter unit. As the Blenheim aircraft proved unsuitable for daytime duties, the unit began operating as a night fighter. It operated in this role until the end of the war, operating successively in Great Britain, North Africa and Italy, where it was disbanded on 21 August 1945.
On 10 May 1946 it is re-established at Biggin Hill as a day fighter unit of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force. It is disbanded on 10 March 1957, following the abolition of that unit.
It was last reconstituted on 1 October 1999 at Northolt, this time as a ground reserve support unit. Its members have participated in combat operations in Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf.
