history
The squadron was formed on 1 June 1937 at Pengam Moors near Cardiff as a liaison unit with the Army Auxiliary Air Force, and entered the fighting of World War II in this role. It carried out anti-invasion patrols, took part in the first "thousand man" raid on Germany, or laid a smokescreen over the battlefield during the Dieppe landings. In November 1942, he moves to North Africa, where he operates mainly as a combat unit, attacking enemy airfields and communications as well as protecting Allied convoys. It ceases to exist on 25 January 1944.
On 15 February 1944, it is reactivated by renumbering 462nd Squadron during its move to Italy and, armed with heavy bombers, Halifax (and later Liberator) until the end of the war, it attacks targets in northern Italy and the Balkans and also supplies the resistance movement in these areas. It ceases to exist on 27 July 1945, renumbered 214th RAF Squadron.
On 10 May 1946, it is reconstituted at Llandow as a Royal Auxiliary Air Force fighter unit designed mainly to fly reservists, and ceases to exist with the abolition of that RAF component on 10 March 1957.
It was last reconstituted in 2014 at Cardiff as a ground support unit within the Royal Auxiliary Air Force and continues to operate in that role to this day.
