history
The squadron was formed on 1 June 1937 at Kenley as a liaison unit with the Army as part of the Auxiliary Air Force. In November 1938, it is converted to a fighter unit and enters the fighting of World War II in that role (as a regular unit). In November 1939, it moves to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), but at the time of the German invasion of France, it is in the process of being rearmed (and retrained) as Hurricane fighters and is soon withdrawn back to the UK, where it subsequently takes part in the Battle of Britain, offensive sorties over occupied Europe, and also participates in air defence. In March 1942 it is transferred to India, where it operates in air defence or attacks on ground targets in Burma until its disbandment. It is disbanded on 10 June 1945.
On the same day it is reactivated by renumbering 135 Squadron, preparing for a landing in Malaya, which did not occur due to the defeat of Japan, and is disbanded again on 20 September 1945.
On 10 May 1946, it is reconstituted at Biggin Hill as a Royal Auxiliary Air Force fighter unit designed mainly to fly reservists, and ceases to exist with the disbandment of this RAF component on 10 March 1957.
