Unit arises 15. July 1942 on the base Old Sarum as a unit intended primarily to control artillery fire, carried out but also courier and connecting flights. Its flying personnel were members of the artillery, who went through pilot training. The unit participates in the allied landings in north Africa (operation Torch), then supports the british 1. the army (1st Army) during the fighting in Africa and 8. the army (8th Army) in Sicily and Italy, where it ends its war pilgrimage.
