Feldwebel Johann Obeslo

* 15 May 1893 Kozojídky, Austria-Hungary
+ 14 October 1917, Romania

Pilot K. u K. Luftfahrtruppe

Units. May 1893 in the village of Kozojídky near Hradec Králové in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.
He graduated from the municipal school in Kozojídky, and from the burgher and secondary industrial school in Nový Bydžov.
In 1911 Jan Obeslo's father, František Obeslo, bought his son's plane around 1911.
Around 1911 and 1912 he joined with the adventurer V. Barthell. Together, with breaks, they flew around the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and abroad. They operated successively several types of aircraft. At the beginning of the war, their plane or planes were confiscated by the military authorities.
Jan Obeslo was conscripted on 13 May 1915 and joined the flying school in Fischamend and Wiener Neustadt (Vienna New Town).
On 14 August 1915 he was sent to Flik 13 as a pilot. On 6 December 1915 he received his pilot's diploma (Austro-Hungarian pilot's certificate) FAI 295.
On 1 December 1916 he is transferred to the bomber unit Fluggeschwader 1 (later Flik 101G). Where he flies at the rank of Feldwebl (Fighter).
He is hospitalized since 6 June 1917, it is not clear whether it was a war injury or an illness. From the hospital and subsequent convalescence he returns to duty with Flik 101G on 14 August 1917. But the very next day he is sent to Flik 30 at Marmaros-Sziget on the Russo-Romanian front. On 5 September 1917 he had an accident in which the new pilot Leutnant Felix Krausz was killed, Jan Obeslo himself was only slightly injured. On 14 October 1917 he participated in a combat flight in a fighter aircraft Albatros D. III (Oeffag) 53.20., from which he did not return. It took off at 8:50 a.m. and collided with an enemy fighter during an operational flight. There are two possible enemy pilots as his slayers.
The slayer could have been Ensign G.E. Suk of the 9th Air Squadron, who was piloting the aircraft Spad VII. No. 1440 or Ensign V.I. Yanshenko of the 42nd Air Squadron. Air Squadron, who was piloting the aircraft Nieuport 21.
Feldwebel Jan Obeslo crashed his Albatros D. III (Oef) 53.20. near the Romanian village of Obermilleschoutz near Radautz.

Honours: 2x Silver Medal for Bravery II.Class

Notes:
Fluggeschwader 1 was probably built in late 1916. In summer 1917 it was renamed Fliegerkompanien 101G (Flik 101G).
Lieutenant G.E. Suk *12.12.1896, + 28.11.1917 - 7 aerial victories
Lieutenant V.I. Yanshenko *1.1.1894, + ? - 6 (16) aerial victories
