The German operation also known as the Channel Dash (sprint channel), the aim of which was the passage of the battle cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen the English channel from Brest to German home ports, without being significantly damaged or destroyed by the british armed forces. The event was successfully carried out between 11. and 13. February 1942.

The Luftwaffe provided the ships air cover. This part of the event is referred to as operation Donnerkeil..
