Dne 2. května 1957 byl založen řád „Za vědy a umění“. Řád byl založený a určen jako odměna těm francouzským občanům, ale i cizincům, kteří svoji literární, uměleckou či vědeckou činností se zasloužili o rozvoj vědy, kultury a umění.
Tento řád v roce 1963 nebyl zrušen je živý. Byl udělen například tehdejšímu prezidentovi V.Havlovi. Řád převzal z rukou ministra kultury J.Langa. Mezi nositeli nižších stupňů nacházíme celou řadu českých a slovenských vědců, umělců a literátu.
