Imperial and Imperial Order of the White Eagle
Императорский и Царский Орден Белого Орла
Imperial and Tzar's Order of White Eagle

According to Polish historians, it is one of the oldest orders not only in Europe or it was founded in 1325 by the Polish king Vladislav. The eagle is one of the elements of the Polish royal coat of arms.
The Order was demonstrably restored in 1705 by the Polish King Augustus II. In 1712, the Polish king granted this ancient order to the Russian Tsar Peter I. Great.

STATUTE OF THE ORDER:

Poland, as an unfortunate state after its third partition and after the dissolution of the state ( 1795), had two orders, which were eventually taken over by Russia. One of these orders is the Order of the White Eagle in the Russian environment however we speak of the Order of the White Eagle.
In 1815, i.e. for the annexation of the Polish Kingdom to Russia and its incorporation into the Russian Empire, Tsar Alexander I used the existing Order of St. Stanislaus and the Order of the White Eagle to award and honour mainly Polish nobility and Polish officials, both for military and civilian services to the state and the monarch.

In 1831 (17 November), after the final defeat of the Polish uprising, this order was incorporated by tsarist decree into the existing system of Russian tsarist orders. Only the symbolism changed, with the royal crown being replaced by the crown of the Russian tsars and a white cross with the Polish royal eagle superimposed on the black double-headed tsarist crowned eagle.

On January 22, 1832, it was decreed by the Tsar that the Order would have its own Order ribbon of dark blue.

The Statute of the Order did not specifically address the status of the Order. It was an order that was in a class among the so-called "great" orders, and its status among other Russian orders was quite high. It was ranked in order immediately after the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky.

In the system of Russian orders, the Order of the White Eagle was used as a high reward and award for all citizens of the Russian Empire, both soldiers and Russian nobility, high civil servants and foreigners.

The prolonged Crimean War had its effect on the addition of the Order of the Sword. The Tsar's decree of 5 August 1855 established swords, which are classically placed crossed over the centre of the star at the star and inserted under the crown of the Order.

Order's bounty:
PRO FIDE REGE ET LEGE
"За Веру, Царя и Закон".
FOR THE FAITH OF THE KING AND THE LAW

The February Revolution of 1917 affected almost all the old, classical orders, but perhaps this order was the worst off in terms of art (see pictures). The overthrow of the Tsar put an end to the awarding of the Order as we know it. The Tsar's crown disappeared from the Order's jewel and the 'Order's star became "almost a trinket or the Order's motto (motto) was removed for good measure and the revolutionaries replaced it with a laurel wreath.

Description of the Order's jewel:
Obverse:
A golden tsarist double crowned eagle is covered in black enamel. The eagle proper is surmounted by a tsarist crown with blue pendilia. The original cross of the Order of the White Eagle is superimposed on this jewel (see picture).

Reverse:
On the back of the jewel is a small white cross in the central part. Noteworthy is the hinge on the crown for attachment to the grand chest.

Star of the Order:
A gold, eight-pointed star that has a white enamelled pawed cross with red edging, silver rays between the arms and a small gold flower in its centre. On the blue intercircle is the inscription:
'Pro fide,rege et lege'.
(For Faith, King and Law)

STUHA:
Dark blue ribbon
