At the suggestion of Oberbaurat Kniepkamp, M.A.N. had its design completely redesigned by La.S.100[/i] (Pz.Kpfw. II). The design was to move towards a central engine and gearbox location (the first production series Pz.Kpfw. II had these components on the right side). The new La.s.138 tank concept was ordered in four prototypes and a production run of 85 units. However, work on the production machines was not completed. By 4/1939, only 43 tanks had been produced, and further production was halted in favor of an approved modification of this platform into a flamethrower tank Pz.Kpfw. II (Flamm) Ausf.A. The decision to modify the platforms Ausf.D[/i] and Ausf.E was made on 21 January 1939.
Interestingly, there were two variants of the Ausf.D platform. In fact, there were two series.
The 8.serie/La.s.138 of 1938/39 bore the designation Pz.Kpfw. II Ausf.D1 (the designation of the flame-throwing version of the Pz.Kpfw. II (F) Ausf. A).
The 2.serie/La.s.138 produced directly for the next order of new flame-thrower tanks (Pz.Kpfw. II (F) Ausf. B) of 1941 bore the designation Pz.Kpfw. II Ausf. D2. Both modifications (Ausf.D1 and Ausf.D2) were later also used for conversion to tank fighters Panzer Selbstfahrlafette fur 7,62cm PaK 36(r) auf Pz.Kpfw.II "Marder II".
The only visible difference that can be used to identify the assignment of this-or-that machine to the D1 vs. D2 series is the number of drive and tension wheel spokes.
In the Ausf. D1 there are 11 spokes on the drive wheel and 10 spokes on the tension wheel.
For Ausf. D2 there are 8 spokes on the drive wheel and 8 spokes on the tension wheel. On the Ausf. D2, the tracks that allowed the ice grabber to be mounted on ice also underwent modification (similar to Mittelstollen). Basically, there would be no regular tank built on the Ausf. D2. Only flame-thrower tanks and Marder II tank fighters were to be built on this platform.
