Project of heavily armored VK 16.01 (later bore the name Pz.Kpfw.II nA verst.[/I:aaaaaa] (reinforced)) from 1939. It was to be a new concept of the hull and tower with a maximum thickness of armor up to 80 mm. The platform was to be designed by the company MAN, superstructure and tower of the company Daimler-Benz. The program VK 16.01 used several components from a similar project reinforced by Pz.Kpfw.I ( VK 18.01) firmy Krauss-Maffei . The actual production of armored hull and tower plates was provided by the company Krupp. The drawing documentation was completed on March 15, 1940. The first prototype was to be demonstrated on June 18, 1940. The long-term plan for the production of tanks Panzerprogramm 41 from 30.5.1941 envisaged a long-term production of 252 pieces until 1.4.1945. It was planned to use the construction of this tank to produce a flamethrower tank Pz.Kpfw. (Fla.W.) VK 16.01 (Fl.)[/I:aaaaaa]. A total of 192 such tanks were expected to be produced by April 1, 1945. However, the original first delivery of 150 pieces of flamethrower version was changed to additionally produced modified tanks Pz.Kpfw.II (Flamm) Ausf.B (version of the Ausf platform .D2).
The production of prototypes (probably only 3 out of 4 ordered) and verification zero 30-piece series was extended. At that time, other types of tanks became a priority, the construction itself VK 16.01 was obsolete. The original order for another 100 tanks was canceled on July 1, 1942.
At the turn of 1941/42, prototypes and serial machines underwent a winter test in St. John. Mobility in deep snow was verified. Further testing took place in Kummersdorf. Prototypes V20, V21 and V22 and serial machines Fgst.Nr. took part in the tests. 150202 a 150203.

Units in which VK 16.01 were deployed:
1.Kp./Panzer-Abteilung z.b.V. 66 (later assigned to Pz.Rgt.29 and 2.10.1942 renamed to 8.Kp./Pz.Rgt.29 as part of 12.Panzer-Division) - during the formation of the unit had 5 tanks in the state Pz.Kpfw.II Ausf.J, as of 13.8.1942 already had 7 tanks, 23.1.1943 received 12.Panzer-Division 10 new tanks. As of May 9, 1943, the unit had only 6 tanks, the remaining six were ready for transport to Pz.Inst.Abt.559 stationed in Krupka.
13. Reinforced police-tank company
Panzer Company 221
Panzer Sicherungs-Kompanie 350

Some machines were still in service at the end of 1944, perhaps even before the end of the war.
