History of the emergence of heavy fighter Pe-3[/heading]

The impetus for the emergence of a heavy fighter with long-range was the German night bombing of Moscow in July 1941. For the adjustment was chosen bomber Petljakow Pe-2, adjustment was made in just seven days! Of the aircraft was removed all unnecessary, aerodynamic braking from the wings, the bottom of the range, the removal of pylons has been reduced supply of bombs, radio compass, radio station BSB with a long-range was mistaken for a "stíhačkovskou" RSI-4, into the vacated space have been installed another three fuel tanks with a volume of 700 liters, in the bow were mounted two velkorážné machine guns UBK, each with 250 rounds. All of these adjustments should aim to reduce the weight and extend the range of the new heavy fighters.

The aircraft was presented to the state commission for the defense and the moscow plant no. 39 was given the command, to to 25. August to build five pre-series aircraft. It was a very challenging task, is the difference to modify one aircraft and use and to produce new specific parts. The construction of five aircraft without drawing documentation is already a time-consuming task.

Newly manufactured aeroplanes tested by the 29. August to 7. September 1941, during these tests were found solid performances, but also a few major shortcomings, which had to be removed. Some of the problems were solved before production and some of the address up to during production. Problematic was the imposition of fixed machine guns in the glazed nose, the plexiglass in the vicinity of machine guns shattering and so were several parts replaced by a plate, later it turned out that this is not enough, because the flames from the machine guns, blinding the pilot so that it is not able to re-target focus, bothered and glass floors, the ground searchlights that way the pilot again oslnily. Problematic was also the ejection of bullets from the machine guns, causing damage to the coolers, first create a kind of slides, you will in practice not worked and so up in the production of the final edit - the bullets remained inside. The pilots, who the new Pe-3 tried in combat, very criticized the absence of a bulletproof windshield and completely missing the passive protection of a navigator / gunner. Additional finishing touch of the weaponry both offensive and defensive. An attack on a German bomber a mere two machine guns, though it was about velkorážné UBK, was a little effective and therefore was later added to the solid cannon ŠVAK the caliber of 20 mm. The dorsal machine gun of 7.62 mm was also little effective, in the field workshops was often duplicated and was later on the production line replaced velkorážným machine gun UBT, which had a longer range and much greater destructive effect. Completely unnecessary to show a fixed machine gun in the tail. Focus was difficult, shooting is ineffective, and so was replaced by a catapult grenades DAG-10. These grenades have been thrown at padáčku for aircraft, where the subsequently explode, and their explosions should either enemy aircraft damage, or force the pilot to go and it got into firing range of the rear gunner.

These and some other adjustments (e.g. exchange of radio stations the RSI-4 in the original) have been introduced into production by the end of 1941, further adjustments followed, but it has already changed the labelling on the Pe-3bis.
