Dornier Wal (Do 15)

Wal's first takeoff, with BMW engines, took place on November 6, 1922. A total of about 300 units were produced. Of this number, it was produced in Italy by Costruzioni Meccaniche Aeronautiche S.A. (CMASA) in Marina di Pisa and Piaggio 150, in Spain for CASA 40, in the Netherlands for Aviolanda do 50 and in Japan for Kawasaki 3 aircraft. Due to the restrictions arising from the Treaty of Versailles after World War I, they were produced in Germany only from 1932.

There were two basic versions, civilian (Wal-Verkehr) and military (Wal-Militär). Subversions were derived from them, differing most often by engines. The biggest changes were made on a type called the Super Wal, with a redesigned fuselage and equipped with two or four engines. Wal-Verkehr flew with civilian carriers in Italy, Japan and Deutsche Aero Lloyd. The military versions were used by the navies of Spain, Chile (8 pieces, manufactured by CMASA, from 1926 to 1943) and Brazil (7), Argentina (5 pieces, manufactured by CMASA), Colombia (4) and Uruguay (2). The largest foreign user of Dornier Wal was the Netherlands, about 50 of them, which deployed them within the Marine Luchtvaartdienst (MLD). On December 30, 1941, there were six Wal-type aircraft at the Soerabaya Aviation School in Java. All of them gradually fell victim to the Japanese air raid. The last Dutch Wal in East Java was destroyed by its own troops on March 6, 1942, in retreat before the Japanese army.

In 1935, the Luftwaffe received 30 pieces called Do 15. At the beginning of the war, they were replaced by more modern types and the remaining transferred to training units.

In December 1938, two Dorniers Wal took part, aboard the Schwabenland, on a German expedition to survey and map the northern Arctic. During 15 flights, these aircraft covered an area of 600,000 km2 and took more than 11,000 images with special Zeiss RMK 38 cameras. About one-fifth of the Arctic, which Germany named Neuschwabenland and also declared its own territory, was mapped. To confirm these claims, several thousand Nazi flags and several steel rods marked with the expedition were dropped from the planes.
