History:

Medium bomber, Armstrong Whitworth And.W.41 Albemarle was created on the basis of the technical specifications B.9/38. The department of aviation addressed these requirements in four aircraft manufacturer, but the company only Armstrong Whitworth Limited (hereinafter referred to as AW) and Bristol is a competition participated in. AW offered to the project And.W.41 and Bristol turn your Type 155.

Technical requirements B.9/38 were formulated at a time when Britain has done against Germany, a policy of concessions, at the Ministry of aviation, however, it was clear that the RAF needs to urgently strengthen the numbers of their bomber squadrons, therefore, arose the requirement for a medium bomber that could be produced mainly from non-deficit of domestic raw materials, here the ministry was envisaged the fact that the German submarines managed to block the sea route and Great Britain would have blocked access to important raw materials. Another requirement was a method of production - aircraft, parts and components should supply a large number of small suppliers. This solution was very demanding on the logistics of producing, but in the event of war it was almost impossible to produce completely discarded, e.g. the air raids.

Interesting was also, that the ministerial requirements did not meet completely the requirements of the RAF. The ministry required such as defensive armament concentrated in the rear turret, the designers and the command of the RAF, they were rather disposed to deal with the spine and the bottom of the engine. Presented projects to both participants of the competition were so different, that in June 1938 to adjust to the requirements of the newly B.17/38 for the Bristol Type 155 and B.18/38 for And.W.41. The end of the year, however, Bristol from the competition and so the project company AW became the winner.

The final project And.W.41 featured středoplošník mixed design, the main wing spar was a steel as well so the hull was made up of steel profiles and cover panels were made of plywood, the control surfaces and the rear part of the fuselage was covered with canvas. A five-member crew had for its defense available in four machine guns Browning Mk.II in the dorsal turret Boulton-Paul and under the fuselage vysunovatelnou turret with twin Brownings. Drive the aircraft to ensure the engines with a pair of Bristol Hercules XI.

After ordering two prototypes came almost immediately in order to 298 serial bombers, marked And.W.41 Albemarle B Mk.I, this order was after the termination of the war, Germany was extended to a total of a thousand planes, all only on the basis of the project and two unfinished prototypes! To the first take-off occurred up to 20. 3. 1940, immediately after the first test flights revealed that the airplane has too little bearing area and weight exceeded the calculated values. The designers were forced to fundamentally change the basic dimensions, wing span was at the ninth serial machines enlarged by more than three meters and the weight was after the consistent reduction reduced about 1 360 kg.

Complicated was the production, final assembly took place in a newly built factory in Gloucesteshire in the city Brockworth, here the production of the greatly stalled. The RAF, however, on the other hand, the new aircraft of Albemarle too wasn't, it was thanks to their performances, which were for a bomber of this category rather below average. The influence on the deterioration of the calculated performances had re-growth take-off weight. The new aircraft didn't want for their units or headquarters of the coastal air force, which saw a major problem in the front plywood panel. Plywood in wet conditions, quickly losing strength, due to its swelling. From the giant contracts for 1 000 bombers eventually built a total of only 44 aircraft (including two prototypes). In the version of the Albemarle B Mk.Also. In the bomber version was built one prototype of the Mk.IV, which was powered by american engines Wright Cyclone.

After the failure of the Albemarle as a bomber occurred to its adaptation on the version of the ST and GT, adjustment of the ST was intended for the transport of paratroopers and version GT again for a tow truck gliders. The bomber version of the B was adjusted to version of the ST or GT. The transport version had only a four man crew, that could defend kulometným twin Vickers K in the top střelišti (turret was removed). So in total it was made of 602 aircraft Albemarle, including the prototypes and their production was discontinued until the end of the year 1944. The aircraft used by 161, 295, 296, 297, 511 and 570 squadrons RAF and 14 aircraft of this type was sent to the USSR as a gift to the royal family.

Detaily zajímavého "křížence". Vzhledem k tomu, že všechny prameny uvádějí věž Boulton-Paul pouze na strojích B Mk.I, snad jde o některý ze strojů upravených na standard GT.
