The regiment is named after the youngest daughter of the Governor General of Canada, Duke Connaught, and begins to form on 10 August 1914.

Within a week it has already enlisted 1,098 men of which 1,049 had previously served in the armed forces during the war in Africa.
The regiment conducts its first parade on August 23, 1914 at Lansdowne Park, Ottawa in the presence of Princess Patricia and the regiment receives its field standard, which she personally designed and made. On the flag are the letters VP in a circle which stands for Victoria Patricia.

On 28 August the regiment leaves Ottawa and embarks in Montreal aboard the SS Megantic. However, the voyage to England is interrupted due to enemy activity in the Atlantic, and it re-embarks at Lévis, from where it moves to Quebec, where it awaits an opportune moment to finally embark here on HMS Royal George, bound for England.

On 18 October 1914 she arrives in the islands, where her first stop is Bustard Camp on Salisbury Plain; on 16 November she joins the 80th Brigade Expeditionary Force at Winchester.

On 20.12.1914 the regiment arrives at Southampton to embark here with the rest of the brigade for France the following day. It thus becomes the first Canadian unit on the battlefield (other than the 1st Canadian Medical Corps, which was already in action).

The unit first arrives in the trenches on 6 January 1915. On 22 December 1915, it passes from the 80th Brigade to the command of the 7th Brigade, 3rd Bn. Canadian Division.

During WWI the regiment suffered losses in the foma of 1272 killed and 82 captured.

On March 19, 1919, the regiment is Ottawa disbanded in Ottawa, only to be re-formed as a permanent militia a month later.
