The design of the floating submarine base of the 1886 series was designed at the Central Design Bureau Ajsberg under the direction of Chief Designer I.G. Kogan, using many elements from the Project 310 submarine floating base.
A total of 7 Project 1886 vessels were built, which were assigned to the Northern, Baltic, Black Sea and Pacific fleets of the Soviet Navy in 1963-1972.
Two of the vessels (Gangut and Borodino) were built to a modified Project 1886U design and were intended for training duties.
In 1965, India ordered the construction of 4 Project 641 submarines from the USSR, for which it also required a floating base. Based on the Indian Navy's requirements, a modified Project 1886M was developed, under which the INS A14 Amba was built at the Nikolayev shipyard.
The vessels were inducted into the Navy's fleet from 1963 to 1972, and their decommissioning began in 1991. The last serving ship was decommissioned from the Russian Navy's armament on 31.07.2006, the Indian Amba was decommissioned 2 weeks earlier - on 16.07.2006.
The vessels had a full displacement of 8310 t (standard 5270), length 144.8 m, width 18.1 m and draught 5.96 m. They reached a maximum speed of 16 knots. Propulsion was provided by 2 PG-112 electric motors (200 hp each), electricity was produced by a total of 8 diesel generators - 2 x 1470 kW, 4 x 500 kW and 2 x 300 kW.
With full tanks, the vessels had a range of 11,500 nautical miles (9 knots) and 5,000 nautical miles (13 knots) respectively.
They were armed with a quad of 57mm twin-cannon AK-725 and a pair of 45mm 21hp. After modernization, some vessels also received a pair of PPLRK Strela-3 quadruple launchers. At the same time as it was the first floating submarine base of the Soviet Navy, Ivan Kolyshkin was also armed with an on-board helicopter - Ka-25.
The floating base could provide two Project 629 (Project 651) submarines or one first-generation nuclear submarine. They could carry up to 44 torpedoes of 533 and 400 mm calibre on board.
The vessel's crew consisted of 250 persons, including 18 officers.
Note: The Project 1886U and Project 1886M vessels differed slightly from Project 1886 in displacement, dimensions and armament.
