Pz.Kpfw.-Turm VK 30.01 (Bauform 246)
Completed towers of the 0th series of the development project VK 30.01 (H), which were not mounted on tanks were used as static defensive positions. The first mention of use for this purpose dates back to November 10, 1942 in the drawings "Atlantikprogramm". WaPrüf Fest stated in a report of February 11, 1944 that the six towers are located in Krupp in Magdeburg, where they were modified for this new purpose. The towers were armed with Kw.K. L/24 and MG 34, the optical binocular sight was T.Z.F. 9. The bunker with this turret was to have a supply of 168 rounds for the cannon and 21,000 rounds for the machine gun. The armor of the tower reached 50 mm in the front, side and rear parts, the ceiling was 15 mm thick. The height of the tower itself was about 1000 mm, the concrete foundation was about 330 mm high. One tower was tested, the rest were prepared. May 5, 1944, all 6 towers were to be mounted in concrete positions on the Atlantic Wall [* 1 *]. However, only four towers were used. [* 2 *] 14.9.1944 In Fest reports that two towers are to be located on the so-called Westwall (West Wall - defensive western line). These towers were reported on September 21, 1944 in the state of Höherer Pionier Kommandeur z.b.v. 4. Heeresgruppe B and Höherers Kommando Saarpfalz applied for a location and an order for the installation of those towers. In the report of March 26, 1945, all towers are kept in positions on the Atlantic Wall and the West Wall. [* 1 *]
A recent publication by Messrs. Jentz and Doyle [* 2 *] states that the pair of towers were in the state of Fest.Pi.Stab 27 (Fest.Pi.Kdr.XXI).
The bunker created to mount this tower bore the designation Bauform 246.
