Pz.Kpfw.-Turm VK 36.01 (Bauform 247)
The first mention of the possible use of tank turrets from the heavy tank project VK 36.01 can be found in the "Atlantikprogramm" drawings from 10.11.1942. Details of the turret conversions are given by Krupp, the company that was to develop and produce the turrets, in their report dated 6.5.1943. The main weapon was to be the Rheinmetall Waffe 0725 conical-barrelled gun, for which special ammunition was needed, e.g. the Krupp PaK 41 cannons. The turret crew was to stand, as the two seats were to be abolished, the commander was to sit on a newly constructed folding seat. The turret was to be manually operated only, the foot pedals for machine gun firing were to be retained. Many components to complete the turrets were destroyed and missing. The company informed the Waffenamt (Ordnance Office) of this. WaPrüf Fest informed on 11.2.1944 and 5.5.1944 about the status of these turrets, which it registered in the planned static positions. Six of these turrets were to be armed with 7.5 cm Kw.K., MG 34 and a T.Z.F. 9 sight. However, the turrets were not completed because the plant where they were located was bombed. However, the plans persisted, but were not pulled into final form. The finished ones were to be used, presumably, on the Western Defence Vale. After the Krupp factory in Essen was captured, five of the six towers were found unfinished.
