The Barnaul-T automated air defence command system is designed to support the command of very short-range (VSHORAD) and short-range (SHORAD) military air defence assets - e.g. 2K22 Tunguska hybrid complexes, PLRK 9K330 TOR and its modifications, 9K33 OSA and its modifications, Strela-10M3 and its modifications, 9K38 Igla and others.

The ASV consists of several modules designed to work at different levels of command:
- MP (planning module, МП), planning module 9S931 / 9S931-3, or its wheeled variant MP-K (МП-К, index 9S931-1). These modules are designed to work in brigade (primary MP-K), regiment and squad (primary MP modules) command post configurations.
- The MRU-B (modu разведки и управления, МРУ-Б), the reconnaissance and command module 9S932-1 / 9S932-2 is designed to provide command of an anti-aircraft battery and is equipped with the 1L122-1 radar. The MRU-B module is capable of direct communication with ASV elements integrated at the platoon level of mobile PL assets (2K22 Tunguska, 9K330 TOR, 9K33 OSA, Strela-10M3).
- The PMUO (переносной модуль управления ogнём, ПМУО), a portable fire control module 9S933 to provide platoon command of a platoon of portable PLRK gunners (e.g., 9K38 Igla).
- KSAS (complex of means of automation of a detachment of shooters-zenitчиков, KSAS), means of automation of a squad of anti-aircraft gunners 9S935.

ASV allows to receive directly information from radars 9S18M, 35N6 (brigade level), P-18M, P-19M, or data information via communication nodes R-166, R-166-0,5, MP-1IM.

The Barnaul-T is integrated on the MT-LBu tracked platform (9S931, 9S932-1) or BTR-MD (9S931-3, 9S932-2), except for the brigade command element MP-K (9S931-1), which uses a Kamaz 6x6 chassis with a trailer. In 2017, the integration of the MRU-B on a tracked chassis BMP-3 was presented at the Army 2017 exhibition, the vehicle on display had the same index as the vehicle on the MT-LBu chassis (9S932-1).
