In 1940, probably out of concern that Lorraine would not be able to complete the armoured personnel carrier project, Lorraine 39 L, Renault was commissioned to develop a new armoured personnel carrier using components from a new armoured supply vehicle design Renault DAE (UE 3). A box body was to be mounted on the platform from the future Renault UE 3, which was to carry 10 soldiers in addition to the driver. However, the prototype as built was to carry only the driver and 7 soldiers. It differed from the design of the 11-seater transporter, the chassis was identical but had a shorter superstructure at the rear of the vehicle. There was also a proposal for an extended version for 13 soldiers. According to the plans, the prototype was to be ready in 6/1940, mass production was to start in 9/1940. The vision envisaged, as with the competing Lorraine 39 L (Lorraine 39 chasseur du chars), that anti-tank and anti-aircraft versions would be built on the platform.
The source mentions an alternative designation, VBCP 40 R (voiture blindée pour chasseurs portés), which could be carried by later production vehicles. A photograph of the prototype has not yet been published, only the chassis design is known (mock-up and prototype Renault DAE (UE 3)).
