Renault KERAX is the designation of a type series of trucks based on Renault civilian commercial vehicles designed for difficult off-road conditions. The production of KERAX vehicles with different drive configurations has been going on since 1997, while a modernization program took place in 2006 (and in 2009 the range of engines was expanded). 4x4, 6x6, 8x4 and 8x8 vehicles are available in a variety of designs, including heavy-duty tractors. The type board is adapted to the requirements of the armed forces for better mobility in the field, the possibility of air transport ( C-130 Hercules and the like) or the possibility of ballistic protection of the cabin (additional or reinforced directly from production). The manufacturer offers users a choice of several engines varying in power and emission standard, several chassis length and wheelbase options, as well as different cab variants depending on the intended use (short only with seats up to extended and rest areas).
The production of the KERAX type series for civil users was terminated in 2013 and was replaced by the Renault Trucks C and Renault Trucks K type series. For the needs of the armed forces, the type series is still on offer.
Thanks to the cooperation with Volvo, Renault KERAX was produced not only in France, but also in Russia since 2009 (Volvo plant in Kaluge) or in the USA (since 2011 by Mack Defense as Mack KERAX).
Until 2009, KERAX vehicles were produced with 6-cylinder DXi11 engines with a capacity of 10.8 l (EURO 3) and outputs of 330 bhp (246 kW; 335 PS)/1,650 N⋅m (1,217 lb⋅ft), 380 bhp (283 kW; 385 PS)/1,850 N⋅m (1,364 lb⋅ft) and 440 bhp (328 kW; 446 PS)/2,000 N⋅m (1,475 lb⋅ft). Since 2009, 6-cylinder DXi11 engines with a capacity of 11.1 l (EURO 5) and outputs of 380 bhp (283 kW; 385 PS)/1,800 N⋅m (1,328 lb⋅ft), 430 bhp (321 kW; 436 PS)/2,040 N⋅m (1,505 lb⋅ft) and 460 bhp (343 kW; 466 PS)/2,200 N⋅m (1,623 lb⋅ft).
KERAX vehicles are used in several armies around the world, probably the most in the use of the armed forces of the French Republic and Canada (American production Mack KERAX).
