As historian Pierre Miquel wrote The Great War Daily, editor Pluriel wrote: "This man had lived four years in the war, had been wounded nine times, had faced death a thousand times, had once been unjustly almost shot as a mutineer. He escaped all dangers, all accidents. [...] All only to be killed twenty years later on his way home on the steps of a bus."


During his wartime career, he personally captured 1,180 German soldiers.
