Rogožarski R-313 (Рогожарски Р-313)

History. In connection with the growing danger of war in the second half of the thirties and in Yugoslavia started to carry out intensive work on designing new types of modern combat aircraft. Specifically, JKRV (Jugoslovensko kraljevsko ratno vazduhoplovstvo i pomorska avijacija = Yugoslav military and naval royal air force), expressed a desire to have in the arsenal of multi-purpose aircraft, which can be it would be use as a light bomber, ground-attack aircraft and tactical explorer. Work to embrace both the then air races - Ikarus and Rogožarskij.

In r. 1937 belgrade business Rogožarski (Prva srpska fabrika aeroplana Rogožarski - Прва српска фабрика аероплана Живојин Рогожарски А. Д.)working group of the engineer to Simy Milutinoviče (Сима Милутинович ) proceed to the processing of the project of a light twin-engine aircraft battle, which got the designation of R-313. Structurally it was a jednoplošný mid, whose structure consisted primarily of wood and was covered with a canvas blanket. The crew of the aircraft should be two-member - a pilot and a gunner-observer. As the drive were used with two in-line engines Walter "Sagitta" czechoslovak production into the engine nacelles also had to pull the chassis of the French company Messier. Armament predicted up to 400 kg bombs in fuselage bomb bay, and also the installation of one 20mm air cannon in the bow and one of the moving 7,92 mm machine gun in the cabin of the shooter. The aircraft was, at that time, very modern in appearance, the twin-engine mid with retractable landing gear.

Torso with an elliptical cross-section was characterized by long, fully enclosed and richly glazed space for the crew, offering them enough space for their work, and ensure the best view. The pilot was seated in front and behind him was the habitat of the observer/gunner. In the lower part of the fuselage was created closable internal bomb bay equipped with dividers. The rear part of the fuselage ukončovaly double tail characterized by the vertical we went with helms of the elliptical shape, and a simple horizontal elevator, with the only movable element.

The crew of the aircraft consisted of two persons - a pilot and a gunner-observer, richly glassed cabin, they offer enough space for their work, and ensure the best view.

Wings, located in the středoplošné configuration, was equipped with ailerons and under each wing was located at the gondola, which contained the engines and in the lower part of the mechanism forward zatahovaného polozatažitelného the chassis of the French company Messier. This system, popular in the prewar years, left under each gondola stand out part of the podvozkového round, which should, in the event of failure zatahovacího mechanism to protect the bottom of the machine before more serious damage during an emergency landing without vysunutého the chassis. Under the rear part of the fuselage was placed the normal záďové round.

Power unit. Two in-line engines Walter "Sagitta" czechoslovak production were located under the wing, the engine nacelles also also zatahoval the chassis of the French company Messier. The inner tank conceived of itself 680 litres of fuel. On the possibility of carrying additional fuel tanks available sources do not speak. Armament predicted up to 400 kg bombs in fuselage bomb bay, and also the installation of one 20mm air cannon from the front and one of the moving 7,92 mm machine gun in the cabin of the shooter.

The prototype was tested in flight for the first time the beginning of the r. 1940 with two piston engines of the czechoslovak production of the Walter Sagitta 1 SR, dvanáctiválci in the configuration of the so-called inverted V, capable to deliver power of 500 CV (373 kW) each and equipped-rotating three-bladed přestavitelnými too. The structure of the aircraft allow that
with these engines was the machine a maximum speed of 460 km/h at the altitude of 4 000 m and at the same time, promised other options development of the type.

Requirements. Barrel weapons formed the automatic cannon Hispano-Suiza HS.404 caliber 20 mm, located at the bow under the Pilotovou through the tube, and one machine gun M. 38 Browning FN caliber 7,62 mm. The combat load consisted of bombs weighing up to 400 kilograms, are stored in a closed bomb bay located under the cockpit pilots.

The construction of the prototype started in r. 1938, and was completed at the end of the following year. The date of the first flight of the R-313 is unclear - according to different sources it occurred either at the end of the r. 1939, or July 1940. Anyway, the new plane largely suit the imagination of the VVS, although experts pointed to the lack of engine performance. Engineers responded to the requirements of the troops very flexible, and before long, they performed a variant of the R-313 with engines Daimler-Benz DB-601 and Rolls-Royce "Merlin". Both variants were given the aircraft to a level similar to foreign types, but due to the German invasion in a number of european countries with the supply of engines of foreign production become unrealistic.

Production and combat deployment. On the combat deployment of the prototype is not a credible report, some of the sources talks about his participation in the fighting in the invasion of the armies of the Axis in Yugoslavia. This is only speculation, when the Germans in April 1940 the war in Yugoslavia, bomber R-313 could hardly overcome making prototypes stage. The amount of produced machines is not known, the reconstruction of the coloration of the available photos will only cover the prototype with ms. engines. Whether they were built more machines with alternative engines, or at least adapted in the prototype, is not known. Available sources vary from the strict statement that was made by a single prototype, only after careful communication, that "to the German incursion was made just a few pieces".

The fact is that the history of the type R-313 ends in the early days of r. 1941. End type 313 is - similarly as the number of produced pieces - is unclear. Some sources talk about 2 pieces, one of which had to be destroyed on startup due to excessive overload, the other had to be destroyed when you try to drift into Greece. It is not entirely clear whether it is the mingling of the fate of a single machine, or on 2 - 3 machines various. Other sources talk of the seizure of the aircraft by the Germans and the subsequent transmission of the R-313 of the Croatian air force.
