The base's parameters allow for the operation of heavier equipment than the F-15C Eagle and F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft in the 48th Fighter Wing. A C-17A Globemaster III transport aircraft carrying aircrew and cargo from a deployment to Southeast Asia visited RAF Lakenheath on 3-4 September 2008 on its return to home base McChord AFB, Washington State, for crew rest and refuelling.
