The aircraft is produced on the line soubežně with aircraft C and D. At the beginning of December was on the new line first hull version of the Email. Because the hull is fashioned with the parts of the wings in one piece, it was necessary to move the wall of the hall and thus increase the distance from the end line to the wall. The Saab is also a demonstrator for Brazil, has one huge CMFD instead of 3 displays at the C, D and required for the Swedish version of the Email.

First flight of the Gripen E (the designation of 39-8) was held on Thursday, 15. June 2017 from the airport in the Swedish Linköping. The machine is out of the country took off at 10.32, and for the next 40 minutes flew over the eastern parts of the Östergötlandu, above which fulfils the first points of the flight test program. At the controls sat Marcus Wandt, test pilot of Saab company.

The first pre-production JAS-39E (fuselage number 39-6001) completed its maiden flight on 26.08.2019 and was delivered to Brazil (fuselage number 4100) in 2020, where it will undergo the tests required for certification by the local aviation authority. The second pre-production aircraft (v.no. 39-6002) completed its first flight on 03.12.2019 and is being used for tests in Sweden. On 24.11.2021, further production aircraft were demonstrated at the production facility's airfield, for a total of 9 units, with the formal announcement of the handover of two units for the needs of the Royal Swedish Air Force (v.nos. 39-6003 and 39-6004) and 4 units for the Brazilian Air Force (fuselage numbers 4101, 4102, 4103 and 4104).
