The ring was a personal gift from Himmler. Production was terminated on 17.10.1944. It is estimated that a total of 14,500 pieces were produced. They were to be returned after the death of the wearer or his departure from the SS. After the end of the war it was determined that they were to be buried with the wearer. By January 1945, about 64% had been returned. They were to be preserved at Vewelsburg Castle. It is estimated that around 3,500 have survived to the present day. Because they were made by casting with "lost wax" they are easily forged.
