The SS-Jagdverband Mitte was formed on 10 November 1944 by renaming it SS-Jäger-Bataillon 502. It took part in the Ardennes offensive as part of the 150. Panzer-Brigade and its members disrupted the Allied rear in American uniforms (Operation Greif). After the defeat of the German offensive, the unit was deployed on the Oder Front (Schwedt) against the Red Army. The remnants of the unit were sent to Austria in April 1945 to the so-called Alpine Fortress, where they lived to see the end of the war in Linz.

There are only three known cases of Irish citizens in the Waffen-SS. Two of them - Unterscharführer James Brady (alias de Lacy) and SS-Mann Frank Stringer (alias Le Page) served in the SS-Jagdverband Mitte between 1944 and 1945. After the war they were both convicted.

The highest number of members of the unit was about 600 soldiers (most of them came from SS-Sonderverbande z. b. V. Friedenthal, or the renamed SS-Jäger-Bataillon 502, some of them were Waffen-SS guerrillas and volunteers from other arms). By 31 March 1945, the unit consisted of only 250 men.
