He was born 12.6.1908 in Vienna and died 5.7.1975 in Madrid, originally wanted to Luftwaffe, but was too tall and old, finally joined 21.2.1940 to the Waffen-SS, was assigned to the Totenkopf Division and fought with it in Yugoslavia, where he was promoted to the rank of SS-Obersturmfuhrer for bravery in combat. He then fought in Russia, but was withdrawn due to a gall bladder ailment and marked: fit only for service in the rear. He was promoted to the rank of SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer and became Chief of the German Special Forces. He wanted to create units along the lines of the British Commandos. He founded a commando school in Friedenthal. His first deployment came in the form of a mission to liberate Mussolini from a hotel in Gran Sasso. After the success of the operation, Hitler decided to create the Special Forces Battalion. After that, several unrealized actions were planned, e.g. the kidnapping of Marshal Petain or the use of live torpedoes in the Normandy landings, etc. In October 1944, Skorzeny devised and planned Operation Panzerfaust, which consisted of kidnapping Admiral Horthy's son [url=https://www.valka.cz//topic/view/17111]Horthy so that he would not defect to the Allied side; eventually Horthy was replaced by a puppet government installed by the Germans. Perhaps the most famous operation of Skorzeny's forces was Operation Greif. These were intended to wreak havoc behind American lines during the Ardennes offensive. Most of the soldiers the Americans captured were executed. Skorzeny and his unit then fought the Soviets west of Berlin. When the Americans captured the bridge at Remagen, Skorzeny was ordered to have his frogmen blow up the bridge, which failed. After the end of the war, Skorzeny was captured by the Americans, who searched intensely for him. He was imprisoned until July 27, 1948, when he escaped. An intensive search was launched, but Skorzeny was no longer in Europe. He flew to Argentina where he became Eva Perón's lover and her bodyguard. He allegedly negotiated the release of SS officers who were still imprisoned: Joachim Peiper, Kurt Meyer and Sepp Dietrich. He eventually settled in Spain where he became a successful engineer and where he died. He was a recipient of the Oak Leaf Cluster and attained the rank of SS-Standartenfuhrer.
