Construction
Single-hull with a pressure hull 47.5 m long, drop-shaped hull shape, cross rear rudders, front deep rudders on the hull.


The Upholder class, named after the first submarine, was the last (so far) class of conventional submarines in the British Navy. A total of 7 ships were ordered to serve mainly in the northern part of the Atlantic in order to be able to release nuclear submarines to perform operations in more distant waters. They were also planned to be used in coastal waters and in the performance of tasks in cooperation with spec. teams (landing and evacuation of commandos, etc.). Finally, only 4 ships were built - Upholder, Unseen, Ursula and Unicorn - and after a short service after the cuts in the navy budget were in 1994 pulled ashore (except Unicorn - for demonstration to customers), preserved and offered for sale. In 1998, it was agreed to rent boats to Canada.
HMS Upholder (as HMCS Chicoutimi) was sold to the Canadian Navy in October 2005 after partial repairs. During the voyage to Canada, a fire broke out on the ship, caused by el. short. One man crew died. The ship was towed back to the port of Faslane and was not transported to Halifax until 1 February on the transport ship Eide Transporter.
