In the first half of the 1930s it was decided to develop a replacement for the heavy armoured cars Sd.Kfz.231 (6 Rad). A modern armoured vehicle on an eight-wheeled chassis was to be developed, which was to form the armament of reconnaissance units, mainly in panzer divisions.

The development was entrusted to Büssing NAG. The company used the 'GS' chassis, which was initially developed for heavy off-road trucks, as a platform. The chassis consisted of a simple frame structure with independently sprung wheels. The vehicle had dual steering for forward and reverse (two drivers). The armored car was to have a 2 cm gun Kw.K. 30 (later production had a Kw.K. 38) and a machine gun MG 34 mounted in the turret. The armour was 8-14.5 mm thick. Later on, many machines received an additional armour mounted on the spars and protecting the front of the hull.

The prototype underwent trials in 1935/36, and after successful completion of these trials, series production began in 1937. The vehicles fought until the end of World War II.
