AŠ-21
( АШ-21)

The one-star seven-cylinder air-cooled supercharged AŠ-21 engine was the work of the team of the design office AD Švecova ( ОКБ А.Д.Швецова) in Omsk under the leadership of VS Nitčenka ( В. .Nitchenko). Many parts and components from engines were used in its construction AŠ-62IR a AŠ-82FN and the resulting engine can be said that the power and weight was half of the engine AŠ-82. The prototype was produced in early 1946 and this year also underwent company tests of the engine. Serial production ran in plant No. 29 ( №29) from 1947 to 1955. A total of 7636 AŠ-21 engines were produced in the USSR.

It was used mainly on aircraft Jakovlev Jak-11 ( -к-11), but it was also used on prototypes of Yakovlev Yak-16, Yak-200, Yak-210 and Četverikov TA-1. It was planned to use the type Antonov An-2 and was to serve as a propulsion unit on the designed light reconnaissance amphibious machine designer Četverikov. Engine parts and blocks were used in the design of the M-26/AI-26 engine ( АИ-26).

In addition to the USSR, other countries were customers of the engine - Czechoslovakia, Austria, Albania, Algeria, Bulgaria, Vietnam, Guinea, GDR, Egypt, Iraq, Yemen, Poland, Romania and Syria.

Since 1952, the AŠ-21 was produced under license in Czechoslovakia under the designation M-21, while the weight of the licensed engine was slightly higher than the original - the M-21 weighed 495 kg.
