Frankfurt am Main was a free and wealthy city that was able to reward its loyal subjects for fighting the enemy. Another interesting decoration is:
The Cross of Honour for officers of the rank and file from 1814.
Ehrenkreuz für die Offiziere der Linie 1814
It was the Governor of Frankfurt who, on 22 October 1814, instituted this cross for the officers of the line, as an honorary reminder of battles seemingly past. The crosses appear in several variations, their diameter varying between 37-39 mm (dorazby and private, improved mintage).
Description of the cross:
It is a footed cross stamped in lighter base metal (bronze ?). The edge of the cross is raised on both sides and the inner surfaces of the decoration are black lacquered. The letters in the surface of the cross stand out. In the centre of the cross is an oval medallion with a two-line inscription : DEUTSCH / LAND. On the surface of the arms of the cross, as a tribute to the Allies, are the initials:
FR (Emperor Franz II of Austria) - FRANZ
AL (Tsar Alexander I of Russia) ALEXANDER
FW (Prussian King Frederick William II) - FRIEDRICH WILHELM
On the lower arm of the cross is the year 1814.
Reverse:
In the central oval medallion are the letters : H XIII RG - (HEINRICH XII REUSS-GREIZ)
Only 100 pieces of the cross have been awarded. The founder himself wore the cross as a necklace decoration. This exception was also granted to the commander of the Frankfurt Battalion, who was Lieutenant Colonel SCHILLER.
STUHA:
The ribbon honors the colors of the Allies. It is 40 mm wide and consists of three equally wide stripes. The stripes are black, golden yellow and orange-yellow. It is the color of the Allied flags of Austria, Prussia and Russia.
The pictures are taken from the offer catalogues, but the originality cannot be guaranteed. The cross represented by "H" is clearly an improved cross stamped very late for the use of an officer who did not want to settle for an "ordinary" cross stamped in base metal.
