In the youth visited school Shrewsbury and Trinity Hall, Cambridge given ended in 1930. Started working in the family firm of Michael Nairn & Co and taktiež súbežne enters into the Fife and Forfar volunteer jazdy, Teritoriálna army (Fife and Forfar Yeomanry (TA)).
From 1939 to 1944 in command of C švadrone to whom vo februári 1944's pridelený as a commander And squads Staffordshireskej voluntary jazdy (The Staffordshire Yeomanry). Together with this unit sa participates in vylodenia in Normandy and the subsequent fighter in Europe ako aj prekročenia the Rhine and the Elbe, ako amphibious súčasť tank regiment.
After vojne again works as a riaditel company, pričom to dôchodku odchádza in 1974. Since 1951 bol zmierčím sudcom Fife.
