Differences from previous version (StuG III Ausf.D):
The most noticeable change was the fitting of a pair of large armoured boxes on the sides of the superstructure, designed for mounting a pair of radios. This allowed these vehicles to be used as platoon and battery level command vehicles as required.
The vehicle was fitted with a pair of folding antennas 2 metres long. The antennas folded into wooden rails.
A large hammer ("perlik") was added to the vehicle's equipment.
The crowbar received a new holder.
The hatches over the clutches/brake got new (smaller) hinges.
Due to the bulkier radio equipment boxes, the engine start handle was mounted backwards.

[After the experience gained during the Eastern Front campaign, further modifications were introduced during production (production from 11/1941 to 1/1942):
A bracket for spare track links (11 links) was mounted on the front of the hull.
The mount for the spare running wheels was moved to the rear of the fenders.
A deflector was added under the engine air vents behind the exhausts at the rear of the hull to direct the exhaust air to eliminate dust swirling (these deflectors were also ordered for fitting on previous versions, they were fitted in field workshops).
The armored fan covers and hatches to access the fans began to be installed.
