The basis of this modification was the platform 8.Z.W. (Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.J - Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.N). Although in the Müller/Zimmermann source the authors mention other development platforms 9.Z.W. and 10.Z.W., this is an error. No such designation was used. The tubs for Pz.Kpfw.III differed from the tubs for StuG and were modified to produce a self-propelled gun. During production, however, there was the use of tank trays, or entire tank chassis, or there were conversions from the original tanks. Use and conversion were forced by a lack of material (air raids) and maintaining the continuity of production.
Production of the StuG 40 Ausf.G was started at Alkett in 12/1942, later these self-propelled guns began to be produced at Miag (2/1943). Both companies produced them until the end of the war. Armor sheets were originally produced by Brandenburger Eisenwerke. Production began at Deutsche Edelstahlwerke in 1/1943, at Harkort-Eicken Stahlwerke in 1943, and at Bismarkhütte in 1944. The engines were manufactured by Maybach in Friedrichshafen, Nordbau in Berlin, M.A.N. in Nuremberg and MBA in Nordhausen.
Characteristics of the first form of StuG III Ausf.G (post-war and model designation "Initial"):
- A superstructure with a different shape of the front part of the superstructure was used (see attached photo). The driver had a side window. It is stated that the shape of this part was influenced by the fact that for the first versions of Auf.G were used hulls originally intended for versions of StuG III Ausf.F8.
- The fan was located on the ceiling of the superstructure.
- Simple shape of the hole for the cannon sight, without additional protection.
- The antenna holders were mounted symmetrically on the rear wall of the superstructure, in later vehicles the right antenna was moved to the right.
- Use of a distance indicator light for night movement in an older type column.
- The billet was placed on the left fender next to the side wall of the superstructure.
- Narrow stops for engine cooling fan covers.
- Different shape of the front parts of the fenders from the superstructure to the small curved fender.
During production, which lasted almost 2.5 years, the design was constantly modified. Adjustments reflected in production were made almost on a monthly basis.
The cast cannon cover is often incorrectly referred to as "Saukopfblende". However, it is a mistake, its official name is "Topfblende".
Between 4.-7./1944 173 tanks were refurbished Pz.Kpfw.III of various versions and determination into the form StuG 40 Ausf.G.
If the Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.M platform was used for the conversion, it is assumed that a pair of sealing flaps was not mounted at the air outlet from the engine.

Držiaky antén boli uchytené na zadnej stene nadstavby symetricky. U neskorších vozidiel bola pravá anténa posunutá doprava.
I na druhej strane má pancier prudký sklon.
Prvá podoba útočného dela StuG III Ausf.G. Najmarkantnejším rozdielom je iný tvar prednej časti nadstavby. Pancier má prudký sklon, na bočnej strane má vodič k dispozícii priezor. Ventilátor sa nachádza na strope nadstavby.

Between 4.-7./1944 173 tanks were refurbished Pz.Kpfw.III of various versions and determination into the form StuG 40 Ausf.G.
If the Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.M platform was used for the conversion, it is assumed that a pair of sealing flaps was not mounted at the air outlet from the engine.

Prvá podoba útočného dela StuG III Ausf.G. Najmarkantnejším rozdielom je iný tvar prednej časti nadstavby. Pancier má prudký sklon, na bočnej strane má vodič k dispozícii priezor. Ventilátor sa nachádza na strope nadstavby.

And one more photo: Slovakia in the spring of 1944. The vehicle is a typical front warehouse. The so-called Schurzen are mounted on the left side and the original shield of the MG 34 machine gun was replaced by a protective shield from the Sd.Kfz transporter. 251. Cannon 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48 with shield type Saukopfblende. (picture below the camouflage, which probably represents the machines from my post above !!!!).

Several StuG III G machines of various production units are part of a larger armored equipment auction (16 pieces in total) held from 29 February 2008 to 15 March 2008 in Jambol.
Photo 1 - later variant with 80mm armor. The command tower is from the Panzer IV tank and is definitely not standard on this type. This is a Bulgarian version. In my opinion, the machine is equipped with all-steel travels. The pulley is steel (without rubber bandage) which together with the homogeneous armor (80mm) could mark a later version. Nevertheless, the machine does not have a wedge deflector on the turret and the front armor to the right of the cannon is bolted - a later version had it welded on. This is an interesting machine.
Photo 2 - 4 version with additional screwed armor (30mm). In my opinion, this particular machine is also equipped with all-steel travels !! - similarly to another Bulgarian machine Pz IV J. Probably another post-war reconstruction due to lack of spare parts.

StuG III Ausf.G ("Black 101"), Panzermuseum Munster, 2011. StuG III Ausf.G were produced in the form of the exhibited machine in November and December 1944. These vehicles then served in the units Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 905, Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 911 and Fallschirm-Sturmgeschütz-Brigade VII. The machine shown was manufactured in December 1944. The Americans captured it in 1945, after which it was transported to Aberdeen Proving Ground in the USA. He then traveled to the Patton Tank Museum in Fort Knox, from where he was donated to the Kampftruppenschule 2 in September 1979. The vehicle was restored to serviceable condition between 1983 and 1987.
