(1833 - 1864)


Narodil se 6. února 1833 v Patrick County ve Virginii. Absolvoval West Point jako 13. ze 46 kadetů v roce 1854. Zúčastnil se bojů s Indiány, při kterých byl raněn. V letech 1854 - 56 bojoval v Kansasu s abolicionisty, vedenými Johnem Brownem a v roce 1859 byl při jeho zajetí v Harper´s Ferry pod velením Roberta E. Leea.

Na počátku občanské války vstoupil do armády Konfederace přesto, že jeho tchán byl generálem Unie. Vyznamenal se v bitvě u Bull Runu 1. září 1862 a byl povýšen do hodnosti brigádního generála. J. B. Stuart si získal pověst nejlepšího kavaleristy války, stal se velitelem kavalerie armády Severní Virginie, kde mu přezdívali "Oči armády".
