2.12.1942 it was decided to produce a test series of self-propelled howitzer, when the machine was to be Sturmgeschutz lafetovaná 10.5 cm le.FH18. In 12/1941 and 1/1942, 5 pieces were to be produced and in 2/1942 the remaining 2 pieces. However, the plan was postponed and eventually 9 pieces were produced by 10/1942 and the remaining 3 pieces until 1/1943. In the meantime, it was decided to mass production. In 11/1942, the first 9 pre-production machines were assigned to 3. Batterie Sturmgeschutz Abteilung 185, which was deployed at the time south of Leningrad. All these pre-production machines were built from rebuilt machines StuG III Ausf.E.
Serial production began in 3/1943 and was produced until the occupation of the production plant of the company Alkett by Soviet units in 4/1945. Serial machines were produced only on the version StuG III Ausf.G. A total of about 1,300 pieces of this self-propelled howitzer were produced (Fgst.Nr. 91651 -? And Fgst.Nr. 105001 -?).
The machine was modified during the production process.
