Diskuse

According to Russian sources and information from pilots on Russian discussion forums, the Su-17M2R variant did not exist. All serial Su-17M2 aircraft whose serial numbers ended in zero or five had, like the Su-7BM/BKL/BMK, Su-17, Su-17M aircraft, an additional shaft behind the nose gear shaft, which contained a single AFA-39 camera for perpendicular imaging. The online aviation encyclopedia Ugolok Neba and others lists some outdated information for the Su-17/20/22, probably taken from the publication by Yefim Gordon and Dmitry Komissarov "Sukhoi Su-7/Su17 published by Midland Publishing in 2011, although it is not listed among the sources. I'm basing it on the most recent comprehensive monograph on the Su-17 aircraft, published in 2011 and 2012 in Aviacia i kosmonavtika vchera, segodnya i zavtra by Viktor J. Markovsky and Igor V. Prikhodchenko. It states in issue 5 of 2012 that the KKR container was developed by the P.O. Sukhoi design bureau itself and that it was originally intended for export variants only. The first flight tests on the Su-20 were conducted in 1975. It was only in the late 1970s that it was decided to use it on the Su-17M3. A new version of the container was tested first on the Su-22 (export version Su-17M2) in 1977 and on the Su-17M3 and its export version Su-22M in 1979. From 1979 ( 1980?), the reconnaissance variant Su-17M3R, later Su-17M4R, and the export Su-22MR, Su-22M3R and Su-22M4R were also produced. If the customer wished, these aircraft were directly delivered in the reconnaissance variant (for the Soviet and Czechoslovak air forces), but all aircraft could be converted by the services to the fighter-bomber version and vice versa, as all aircraft already had built-in wiring for container control. The Su-17M2R variant is not mentioned in the monograph, as their production was discontinued in 1977.
