History:

The Su-17UM or Su-17UM-2D (export designation Su-22UM-2D) is the first trainer type derived from the Su-17/20/22 development series. It was based on the single-seat Su-17M-2D, with some elements of the later Su-17M3. The sloping nose and the possibility of using two types of power units (Ljulka Al-21F for VVS aircraft and Tumanskiy R-29BS for export aircraft) are taken from it.

The conversion was carried out by extending the nose behind the existing cockpit and installing a second cockpit with a complete set of control instruments. The overlap of the instructor's cockpit is in the outline of the forward cockpit, with a glazed spacer sandwiched between the two hinged sections, overlapping the bulkhead (in which two glazed portholes have been cut to allow a view of the forward cockpit from behind) behind the ejection seat of the balanced pilot and the hydraulic forward cockpit hinging system. This mezzanine design is taken from the Su-7U. A hinged periscope is placed in the instructor's overlay for viewing the forward hemisphere of the aircraft (due to the need for unobstructed vision, the mirror from the forward cockpit overlay is removed). The ejection seats in both cockpits are of the standard type, more precisely K-36 of the first production series.

The fuselage carries the original vertical tailplane of the low type from the Su-17M-2D. Weight compensation of the second cockpit is made by removing the left NR-30 gun and its ammunition magazines. The other combat capabilities of the aircraft are retained according to Su-17M-2D. Later production versions were upgraded to replace most of the original Su-17M-2D type instrumentation (avionics and weapons systems) with those of the Su-17UM-3 (Su-22UM-3K) aircraft, which reduced the maintenance costs of the jointly serving Su-17UM-2D and Su-17UM-3 trainers.

The development of the Su-17UM was exactly the opposite than in the Darkfold. First was developed a two-seat version and the next from her single-seat Su-17M3. The length of the fuselage for both versions is the same.
