Supermarine Seafire Mk.XV

Brief History:
During the development of the Seafire on-board fighters, a powerful Rolls-Royce Griffon engine was also installed here. The Royal Navy requested this installation with specifications N.4/43. The answer to these specifications was the Seafire Mk.XV, as we can see, a designation different from previous versions was also used here. The latest version of the Seafire was the L III (Seafire numbering had nothing to do with a number of Spitfire aircraft), the new version was marked "fifteen" and so its designation fills the gap between Spitfirem Mk.XIV (Griffon engine) and Spitfire Mk.XVI (American version of "nine"). The designation Seafire XII was originally considered.

The first prototype was completed in December 1943, previously it was often stated that it was a navalized version Spitfire Mk.XII that this was not the case, we will see in the next description. The fuselage was taken from the Seafire L III (it was reinforced and equipped with a landing hook), this fuselage most corresponded to the version Spitfire Mk.VC. The wing would most correspond to Seafiru Mk.III, it could be folded manually, after its assembly, Seafire had a span of 4.1 m in the hangar. The tail surfaces were taken from the version Spitfire Mk.VIII (pointed SOP) and the power unit was completely taken over from the Spitfire Mk.XII. However, the liquid coolers were already symmetrical and their size and location corresponded to Spitfire Mk.IX. The storage and composition of weapons was similar to the Spitfire Mk.VC, but thanks to the new charging mechanism of the Martin-Baker factory, the stock of grenades increased to 150 pieces. The grenades were already in the ammunition belts. The armament of four machine guns Browning Mk.II caliber 7.69 mm (0.303) later (the aircraft was decommissioned in the early fifties) proved to be ineffective. It was possible to hang a bomb weighing up to 227 kg under the fuselage and two bombs of 113 kg each each under the wings or a fuel tank with a total volume of 204 l. t/15612/title/Supermarine-Seafire-Mk-IIC] Seafire Mk.II, but the weight was already considerably higher. The landing hook was initially located under the fuselage, at the end of the fuselage moved to the fifty-first aircraft, then at the rear under the fuselage appeared a bar that protected the fuselage from damage during landing and also prevented the landing rope from catching the fuselage wheel.

The Supermarine Seafire XV fighter aircraft came too late to intervene in the fighting of World War II. He got into the Fleet Air Arm armament only in May 1945, gradually formed the armament of eight squadrons and operated from the decks of aircraft carriers HMS Venerable, HMS Ocean, HMS Glory a HMS Theseus. Shortly afterwards, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy on board HMCS Warrior. In 1949, France also bought the "Fifteen" and Seafires XV operate here together with Seafires MK.III on board the aircraft carrier Arromanches, but relatively soon were replaced by American aircraft Hellcat and [ url=/viewtopic.php/t/43323/title/Grumman-F8F-Bearcat] Bearcat.
Probably the only user whose Seafires Mk.XV got into the fight was Burmese Union, the Burmese Air Force was established in 1950 and immediately since its inception used twenty "denavalized" Seafir Mk.XV against the Burmese Maoist guerrilla units, these units then terrorized the Burmese population.

Seafire Mk.XV aircraft were not very successful machines and brought rather disappointment, they had several serious design shortcomings that could not be eliminated. The biggest weakness was the Griffon VI engine, which was still immature, eg at higher speeds the engine unexpectedly lost power, it was caused by slipping compressor clutch and loss of power of the fighter engine during takeoff… The propeller was too close to the flight deck, the landing gear was undersized and still had a small gauge (tilted from the fuselage to the wings). In addition, naval pilots with the reverse rotation of the Griffon engine (as opposed to Seafires with Merlin engines) coped even worse than their RAF counterparts. On the other hand, the gyroscopic moment of the propeller, which caused the aircraft to deviate during takeoff and landing, was very unpleasant. The only measure was a recommendation, or ban, not to use a high degree of engine supercharging. For some time, the "fifteen" was even suspended from operational activities. The performance of the aircraft was weaker than that of modern US naval fighters, which Seafire was to compete with.
In Britain, the FAA began to phase them out relatively early, serving the longest with three squadrons of the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, where they were scrapped in 1951. The Canadian Air Force replaced them with aircraft Hawker Sea Fury and the French Aviation navale were replaced by Hellcats and Bearcats.

At the end of 1945, Roman numerals were abandoned and so this aircraft was newly designated Supermarine Seafire Mk.15.
