Supermarine Spitfire LR Mk.II


Brief history:
The Spitfire was a great interceptor fighter, it was designed and built for this role, once it was to be used for attacks over occupied Europe, it was necessary to somehow increase the fuel supply. The first such attempt was the installation of a fixed 182 litre auxiliary fuel tank under the left wing (there was a liquid cooler under the right wing). The first attempts were made on the Spitfire Mk.IA (K9791) and a similar tank but smaller (136 litres) was used on the PR Mk.IC Spitfires.
At a time when it was necessary to provide long-range fighter escort to Handley Page Hampden bombers attacking the Brest Peninsula or Holland, some 60 Spitfire Mk.IIA were modified in this way. The result was the Supermarine Spitfire LR (long range) variant of the Mk.IIA. However, it was not a successful modification, increasing the aircraft's frontal drag, increasing weight and decreasing maneuverability.
Pilots did not like flying this aircraft. The aircraft was unstable and noticeably slower. On take-off, it was necessary to overcome the great force of trying to turn left. The RAF soon took these aircraft out of operational service. The longer range of the Spitfires was later solved by sub-tankers of varying volumes.
