T1E1

is one of the development versions of the T1 heavy tank using electric propulsion. It was also unofficially referred to as the M6A2, despite never being introduced into armament.
The first T1E1 tank was delivered to the Army in December 1941, and subsequently 2 more prototypes with mechanical power transmission were produced, designated as T1E2 and T1E3. The planned T1 prototype with a Hydra-Matic automatic transmission was not eventually realized. The three prototypes produced differed from each other in construction - the T1E3 prototype had a welded hull, the other two had a die-cast hull. As of 26 May 1942, the two prototypes with mechanical power transfer were introduced into service as M6 and M6A1, and mass production of 115 units (50 x M6 and 65 M6A1 for British Army use) was ordered, which began in December 1942. Tests of the T1E1 prototype stretched into 1943, with the T7 90mm gun also being tested.
Despite not being officially introduced, these tanks eventually produced the most of the entire series, 20, as the Ordnance Committee authorised limited production as expected, that, unlike the M6 and M6A1 tanks, they would be included in the US ground forces (the M6 and M6A1 tanks were intended for the Allies). Gradual changes in tactical doctrine, as well as too few tanks produced, caused that no use for the tanks was found, and in December 1944 not only the T1E1 tanks, but also the already introduced M6 and M6A1 tanks, were taken out of service.

Some of the T1E1 tanks were used for tests of propulsion or new artillery armament. In August 1944, a proposal was made to modify the 15 T1E1 tanks produced to fight against heavily fortified areas. A modification (M6A2E1) with reinforced armour and turret from the T29 tank armed with the 105mm T5E1 gun would achieve a weight of up to 77 tons with the powerplant unchanged, and Ordnance Corps officials believed the modifications could be completed by November 1944. The proposal was presented to General Eisenhower, the commander of forces in Europe, who rejected it as impractical. Nevertheless, 2 tanks were tested with the turret from the T29 without armour modification.
