Type 2 "Ka-Mi" Amphibious Tank
The design of the new amphibious tank by Mitsubishi was created at the request of the Japanese Imperial Navy in 1940. The machine was intended to act as a support for the landing operations of the Japanese Special Naval Landing Forces.
The machine used chassis parts, gearbox and other parts from a mass-produced Type 95 "Ha-Go" tank. The turret was taken from the Type 98 "Ke-Ni". However, the hull of the tank was of a new design and welding instead of riveting was used to make it. The front and rear of the tank was ingeniously adapted in shape and design to accommodate floats. Putting on and removing the floats was thus very quick. They were made of 3.2mm thick sheet metal. In addition to the floats, a protective air intake stack for the engine was fitted during the preparation of the vehicle, or a protective raised observation tower with glazed observation slits. Propulsion at sea level was provided by two propellers and the direction of travel was controlled by a rudder mounted under the rear float. In 1941, successful trials of the finished prototype Type 1 "Ka-Mi" were conducted and the Navy ordered the construction of 300 of the slightly modified amphibious tanks. The production vehicles were renamed Type 2 "Ka-Mi". Production was slow, and by 1944, when production was halted, 184 tanks are given as built. The machines, one company strong, were assigned to individual Marine Corps detachments.The first combat deployment is given in the fighting at Guadalcanal. The next recorded combat deployment is as late as 1944 in the Marshall Islands-Roi, [i:Mariana Islands-Saipan, Philippines-Leyte. Combat value was poor due to poor armour protection and tank losses were high.
