Modernization of existing tanks Type 59 (WZ-120) and Type 59-II (WZ-120B) began in early 1990 The modernization includes the digitization of the fire control system, night vision devices, the control of the reactive armor (ERA) to the exposed areas and the possibility of use from the main fired PTRS. Development was completed in 1995. Modernization is offered to the armies of third world countries, which still serves several thousand tanks Type 59 and T -54/55.
The modernization is available in two variants: Type 59D - equipped with a 105 mm Type 83A cannon with a grooved extended barrel Type 59D1 - equipped with a 105 mm Type 79 cannon with a grooved barrel (Chinese copy of the British L5 cannon).
Both variants allow you to shoot the same ammunition type APFSDS, HEAT, and HEAT-FRAG caliber 105 mm. When using sub-caliber APFSDS ammunition, the manufacturer guarantees the penetration of armor with a thickness of 600 mm at a distance of 2000 m.
The tank uses the same fire control system as the MBT Type-80 (WZ-122/ZTZ-80) referred to as Type 37A. The system consists of an optical sight stabilized in two planes, a residual light amplifier, an on-board computer and a laser rangefinder.
