Umezu Yoshijiro

Born in Óita Prefecture in Nakacu. In 1903 he graduates from the military academy, as an infantry officer. He subsequently studies at the Army Staff College, and after graduation he goes to Germany and Denmark to continue his studies.
In 1919-1921 he serves as a military attaché in Switzerland.
In 1920, he is a member of the moderate wing of the Japanese Army (Tōseiha), led by Lieutenant General Kazushige Ugaki in opposition to the radicals (Kōdōha) led by Colonel Sadao Araki.
1923-1924 he serves as an instructor at the Army Staff College and then from 1924 he commands the 3rd Infantry Regiment, until 1926.
.
In the decade of the 1920s he holds various staff positions within the General Staff. He is appointed major general in August 1930 and lieutenant general in 1934, and is given command of the Chinese Garrison Army, which he commands until 1935, when he assumes command of the 2nd Division and commands it until 1936.

In 1936 he is called to Japan to take up the post of Vice-Minister of War, a post he holds until 1938. In that year, he returns to China as commander of the First Army and the following year, 1939, becomes commander of the Kuantung Army, which he commands until 1944. In August 1939, he is appointed general.
In July 1944, Umezu is appointed Chief of the Imperial General Staff and a member of the Supreme War Council.
.
Together with Minister of War Korechika Anami and Chief of Staff of the Imperial Navy Soema Tojoda, Umezu opposes the surrender in August 1945, believing that the army is capable of fighting the Allies and defending the country, with Japosnko subsequently able to negotiate better terms.
He was personally ordered by Emperor Hirohito to sign the act of surrender of the armed forces on [url=/topic/view/74446]September 2, 1945, which occurred that day during a surrender ceremony aboard the battleship USS Missouri.

After the end of the war, Umezu is arrested by Allied authorities and brought before the International Far East Tribunal in Tokyo. Umezu is found guilty of Counts 1, 27, 29, 31 and 32 of the indictment and sentenced to life imprisonment. The verdict was handed down on 12 November 1948.
Umezu died of colon cancer in prison in 1949.
