The headquarters of the ground forces of the Army of the United states (AGF) replaced the 9. march 1942 in the context of the overall reorganization of the Ministry of war so far the General command of the Army of the United states and as the main task to get the formation, training and equipping units for conducting combat operations. Under the AGF was for the purpose of management training of assigned to the command of several armies and some other units. Subordinate to him was also the headquarters of, respectively, the centre, ensuring the training of anti-aircraft units, armored units, airborne units and tank destroyers. Under the AGF was also established headquarters, respectively, the centre, of the amphibious training center desert training and whether or not the refill and the school headquarters. The centre provided training of the units falling under a given type of troops. Amphibious centre sets the units of the selected divisions in the landing operations and the desert centre had the task to train the armoured and mechanized units to fight in the desert. After the time was added another of the centre for combat training in a mountain environment, for training combat on skis and for the training of combat in arctic conditions. By-and school headquarters guided the course of training in individual schools and by-the resorts of the individual types of troops. After a time, he was subordinate to even the above-mentioned centre. AGF under its direct control, leaving the overall supervision of training doctrine, methods, and relevant literature.

The activity of the AGF in the course of the war developed. Since its inception in October of the same year was in a state of emergence and consolidation of influence, which began to show a gradual modulation of the systematizačních tables of the land units. In the period from October 1942 to October 1943 should AGF a clear and fundamental, even if not always easygoing, influence in matters of organization of the troops, so the final form of the structure of the field units with which the american army went to the other phases of the struggle, was mainly the result of activities just AGF. This, of course, benefited also from the experience of field units and commanders in the first offensive operations in north Africa and in the Pacific. From the end of the year 1943 began to increasingly greater initiative in the field tactical organization of troops to take over the commanders of the individual válčišť. The Role of the AGF began to gradually change on an instance, which carried out the analysis and proposed recommendations for changes in the systematizacích the different types of units on the basis of the requirements that came in from commanders váčišť. After the end of hostilities in Europe, AGF has focused primarily on organizational changes and other problems associated with the redeployment of forces to the Pacific.

Units that have undergone training in the facilities of AGF, were being moved to staging areas in the embarkation ports, where the units were sea transported in individual válčišť. AGF thus sent over two million men. It was a continuous process, which had however three peaks. The first occurred in September 1942, when'clock more like 90 thousand men to Britain before the landings in north Africa. The second peak occurred in January-march 1944, when it was more like 315 thousand men were sent again to Britain in order to prepare for the landing in Normandy. With the third highlight of the AGF must deal in August to October 1944, when the european theater of war required an additional 400 thousand men for the development of offensive operations, which build on the successful landings in France. Another considerable part of the forces was sent from the replenishment of the training centres through the by-depotů operated by the force Headquarters of the services of the Army of the united states..
