Two Wellington Mk.V prototypes (R3298, R3299) were created by fitting Bristol Hercules VIII high-altitude engines and special equipment into the rebuilt fuselages of the Mk.I C version. The Frazer-Nash FN 5's forward gun turret was removed, its place taken by a pressurised compartment adjacent to the cockpit. This housed the bombardier's station and was also where the rear turret gunner took refuge during high altitude flight.
The first prototype flew, with the company designation Type 421 and 1400 hp (1044 kW) Hercules III engines, in September 1939, soon followed by a second one with 1650 hp (1230.4 kW) Hercules VIII engines and a new, drop-shaped cockpit overlay.
The Air Force, in Specification 17/40, originally ordered 30 aircraft with Hercules VIII engines, or 38, but only one of these (W5769) was completed in Mk.V standard.
The first mass-produced Mk.V (W5768) was completed as a prototype version of the Mk.VI, followed by 19 others, and 9 were cancelled. These rebuilt aircraft differed from the Mk.V only in the Rolls-Royce Merlin 60 1,280 hp (954.5 kW) engines used.
They were followed by 44 aircraft in which the gunner was already permanently in the pressurised compartment and the modified Frazer-Nash FN 20A rear gunner's turret was sighted in by a periscope sight mounted on the underside of the fuselage.
Production continued with 28 units of the standard design designated Mk.VI A ( Type 442) and 38 units of the Mk.VI G (Type 449). On these, the rear turret was removed and a device for bombing without visual target acquisition Oboe was incorporated. Two Mk.VIGs were combat deployed with No.109(SD) Sqn. and the others served in training crews in the use of the Oboe system.
