He was born in 1922 in Ukraine, in Khmelnytsky region. In 1940, he became a student of the Bakinsky Anti-Aircraft Artillery School. Due to the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, he graduated in August 1941. As an anti-aircraft gunner he fought near Moscow, on the Kalinin Front and on the Western Front. He ended the war as deputy chief of staff of the regiment.

In the post-war period he served in the 1st Independent Army of the PVO. He graduated from the academy, commanded a regiment and a brigade, and in the second half of the 1950s was one of the pioneers in controlling the fundamentally new rocket technology of the PVO troops. In 1959, he led a group of Soviet advisers who trained in the control of new missile technology to Chinese anti-aircraft troops. On October 7, 1959, he participated in first shoot-down of an enemy aircraft by an anti-aircraft guided missile (S-75) in history.
