Viliš And. Ju. VM-1 (Villiš – the first maritime)
Виллиш А.Ю. ВМ-1 (Виллиш - морской первый)

Designer-enthusiast Alexander Justusovič Villiš (Alexander von Villiš - Александр Юстусович Виллиш - Александр фон Виллиш) came from a family of kuronského farmer, and his first experiments with the construction of the aircraft began in Germany and England. In the year 1915, together with the owner of a timber factory F. In. Ebergardem (Ф. В. Эбергард) built a flying boat, for which it later used the designation KS-1. Design work began in march 1915 on order of the department of aeronautics of the Marine general staff (Oтдел воздушного плавания Морского генерального штаба) with the condition that the payment for the aircraft will be performed only in the case of the successful construction and testing. The plane, designed as a biplane, it had a short člunový hull, equipped with a truss tail parts. Because of the lack of complying with the steel tubes was the tail truss made from bamboo. It was basically a boat with truss fuselage and tail, raised high above the horizontal axis of the machine to facilitate the detachment of the keel and the stability of the surfaces from the water surface.

Člunový the hull of a three-digit machine, he has to improve take-off characteristics of a total of 5 kýlových degrees, in addition along the sides of the hull the designers have placed the so-called "blades" (similar to the current immersion of the wings). The latter equipment during the tests on the water but did not show a significant improvement in performance and was again removed from the vessel. The aircraft was carrying one more original element - a device allowing in-flight change of angles of setting the wings at the discretion of the pilot. Control of the airplane ensures the steering wheel in the cockpit.

The shape of the bearing surfaces and the horizontal tail surfaces of the VM-1 in the floor plan greatly resembled a German etrich club Taub. This circumstance is explained early Villišovými works, also having a form resembling this widespread apparatus.

As the driving unit used was engine Gnôme-Monosoupape on the performance of 100 PIECES with a pusher propeller.

Mounting the KS-1 was completed to 1. November 1915 and immediately in November 1915 was applied to the tests. Those conducting future engineer and an experienced pilot Georgiy Anatolyevich Friede ((Георгий Анатольевич Фриде ). The flight characteristics were evaluated as quite satisfactory, however, to fully test the plane failed. Already on the third day of the tests, 23. November, when landing after a successful second flight the test pilot of the military inspection commission managed to overlook it on the surface of the sea floating log (some sources say a piece of ice, which is due to the time of year also possible), perhaps by far the only, and the seaplane during the landing ran into her with his člunovým hull. The resulting rift caused the aircraft sank. That part of the structure was made of bamboo, but the machine to give sufficient buoyancy failed, but sank at least like the last one... Barografický record flight, however, managed to save, and this record confirmed that the flight brief was met successfully. As the pilot of the G. And. Friede was officially the head of the acceptance commission of the military command, so the money for a built plane (despite the accident) And. Ju. Villiš paid got.

After pulling out the VM-1 of the water remains then briefly to the fate of the aircraft is unclear. Thanks to the arrangement of the designer with Vladimir Alexandrovičem Lebedev (Владимир Александрович Лебедев ), the owner of the factory, was transferred in December 1915 a crashed prototype on Komendantské airport, where his history was continued.

Made was in the end only the prototype, since machines with similar characteristics and engines should Russian naval air force already enough and the other type did not appear interested. Yet the designer of the plane did not abandon, on the basis of the wrecked "a's" created by improved already armed two-seater model VM – 2, which ultimately, due to the amount of adaptations and remakes, was given the designation HC-4. Later, he was still created model KS-6. Although the aircraft flew well, the influence of Dimitri Pavlovich Grigoroviče (Дмитри Павлович Григорович), at this time virtually the monopoly of the designer water of the aircraft, caused to the equipment of the Russian air force didn't come aeroplanes VM, but Grigorovičovy M-9.

Note - due to the fact that the plane was sunk and did not finish the complete testing, not detected no additional parameters.
